The oldest continuous sporting competition in the world (probably!)
Few annual individual sporting contests can match the history of the Doggett's Coat and Badge Wager, which was founded in 1715 by Thomas Doggett. For more than 300 years, this race has run through the centre of London, from London Bridge to Cadogan Pier in Chelsea.
The 7,400m race is hotly contested by watermen and lightermen in the first year of their freedom, with many following in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents seeking the prize of the red coat and solid silver badge given to the winners.
The Wager is run by The Fishmongers' Company, and the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames.
